Hello All,
Let’s start with the simple things. My name is Laïssa Christelle Alexis (I insist on using my middle name. Think of it like one of those famous people. For example Neil Degrasse Tyson or Neil Patrick Harris, except my first name isn’t Neil). I am a first year from Orange, New Jersey but I went to high school in Newark, NJ (Whooo, Brick City. Shouts out to you if you get the reference.) I consider both of those places to be home. In Newark, I went to a small school called St. Vincent Academy.
To go a back a little further back, my family is Haitian. I was born in Haiti and lived there until the age of eight. We then moved to the USA. And for those of you wondering, yes, I can speak Haitian Creole.
I’ve only been here at Wellesley for (as of now), 31 days, 10 hours and 17 minutes, so I don’t know a whole lot. (I still get lost. The other day one my way to class, I took a wrong turn and ended up off campus. But thanks to a lovely older student, I was able to find my way back.) I am still learning a lot every day and adjusting myself to being away from the cool people at home. (Hoping to find some cool people here to replace them.) So, you are going to be taking this journey with me.
I haven’t officially finalized my list of activities outside of class yet. But so far, I am in Ethos, which is the organization for students of African descent on campus. There, I serve as the comedy appreciation chair, (because I think I’m pretty funny) and have made it my goal to get a funny black woman on campus (besides me, of course). I also enjoy philosophizing with the philosophy club. I imagine myself to be Plato of some sorts while having these enlighting conversations with my peers.
I think I’ve rambled on long enough. It is time to end up. But WAIT, don’t cry, I will be back soon with another edition of ME and my life at Wellesley. Stay tuned! and Wish me luck!
