I had my first MarMon this past Monday. The Boston Marathon, held on Patriot’s Day every year, runs through Wellesley. In order to help celebrate the marathon and to enable the students to get involved, Wellesley’s administration gives the students the day off to go cheer on the runners. Throughout the year, upperclassmen have told me about this particular day. How special the day is, how fun the day is and most importantly how inspiring and exciting it is to cheer runners on.
Naturally, based on all the reviews I heard, I was excited to experience this myself. Many people wake up early to go out and watch the early runners. Wellesley is about halfway in the marathon, so it is really encouraged that students go out and cheer them on. When I went out there in the early afternoon, there were still a lot of runners; runners of all types, young, old. I even saw a pregnant woman with the sign “Baby on Board”. I could not believe it
I was inspiring to be out there and see the runners giving it their all. Some even told us how this stretch of the race was their favorite part. I teared up a little bit ( just a little bit) as I watched them run. It really is a testament to the human will and the human body that these runners were able to train to eventually run and complete a 26-mile race. It’s incredible. The runners were tired, some were focused, some were smiling at us, high-fiving us but they were all an inspiration to me and I’m sure to other people cheering them on.
MarMon was one the days that I felt happy to be a Wellesley student. It’s so great to be a part of this tradition.
I was a goof and didn’t take many pictures but I leave you with a picture of the sunset, just to give you an idea of what a great day it was.
