So how did I get here? Besides the obvious answer of flying, in this post, I want to briefly outline some of the steps to applying and finally going abroad.
The abroad process should start the summer before sophomore year. You should really start thinking about where you would like to go and what your goals are for that location. Maybe start talking to your advisor of your current/potential major about programs they may require.
I definitely did this and received a lot of advice that really narrowed my search. My advisor recommended the two programs I will be doing this year. My main goal of studying abroad was to become fluent in French. Both places I am studying are French-speaking as well as align with my academic and career interest. It is also useful to discuss with someone because it may help you decide if you want to go in the Fall or Spring, or both like I am. There may be classes offered one semester that you may have to take so check on that.
After doing research and speaking to advisors, you should set up and appointment with the study abroad advisors and see if they have any ideas or advice for you. They will also gladly help you along the process. I have definitely reached out for help on many occasions.
The deadline to propose a semester away is usually the 1st of December in your sophomore year. After that deadline, is when you begin to apply to the program(s) you were thinking of. Don’t worry, you’ll get in.
After your acceptance comes in, (don’t forget to apply for financial aid or scholarships if you need it) you may have various meetings with the Office of International Study and the financial aid office. Try to stay on top of it. Depending on your program, you will probably need to look for housing or apply for a visa. Do that as soon as you can!
Make sure you keep the study abroad office aware of all that needs to be done. They can be of great help. These are just a few, not very detailed steps that I took to get to Senegal. Wellesley makes study abroad pretty accessible to students which is one of the perks of being a student. So take advantage of that!
until next time,
