Valentine’s Day at Wellesley

Yesterday was Valentine’s Day here at Wellesley! And, I guess, other places! But while people celebrate the holiday all over, there are a few things that are special to Wellesley. A very non-comprehensive list of things that happen at Wellesley:

-The dining halls turn it up. Chocolate cups with white chocolate mousse! Chocolate cookies with raspberry icing! And more! It was fancy as heck. I think I gained a few pounds in one day and I have zero regrets.

-The Hoop has a date night. Couples can reserve a table and enjoy a ~romantic~ evening in our on-campus cafe in the basement of the student center. I have two friends who did this and the pics are adorable. There was chocolate, mood lighting, fancy cheese–basically everything you need for a great time.

-Personally, I hung out with a few of my other (single!) friends. We ordered Indian, had an impromptu Taika Waititi marathon (What We Do In The Shadows and Thor: Ragnarok are both hilarious and completely romance-free, fyi), and ate most of a bag of cookies. It was fantastic.

-It snows, then sleets, then rains. This is not because of Valentine’s Day, per se, but it did offer a romantic landscape (at first) and then make it thoroughly unpleasant to be outside (that would be the sleet and rain parts). At least it felt even cozier inside? It looks like it’s going to snow twice next week. I resent this weather in particular and the entire concept of winter more generally.

-Professors bring in snacks. Not all of them, obviously, but I have another friend whose prof turned up with cupcakes. Lucky.

-All the fundraisers. If you want to buy a few roses, a bag of candy, or a valentine, some Wellesley club will definitely be offering. I personally supported the Wellesley Debate Team by ordering a few homemade, still-warm cookies. It was a sacrifice I was willing to make. They were hand-delivered while I was Skyping with my sister and she was a lil jealous.

-I excitedly awaited February 15th, aka half-price candy day. It’s right up there with November 1st for stocking up on cheap sweets, and it’s finally here!

-RAs always organize something. My own dorm, Severance, went all in and arranged a Valentine’s Week. There were decorations, cookies, and more–something every day of the week. The Sev RA’s have always seemed really committed to organizing dorm activities, but I was pretty impressed by their organization this time around.

-The Pub had a special “Cupid’s Chokehold” night. The Pub is our own on-campus, student-run bar in the basement of the student center. The Pub always has something special going on Thursdays, so this was a natural extension. I try to avoid the Pub when it’s full, but I’m sure people with a higher tolerance for noise/people enjoyed the night.

-The book binding department at Clapp Library held a “make your own” Valentine workshop. I didn’t hear about it, which was a shame because I would have one hundred percent gone. Do I have anyone specific to give it to? No, but who cares. I wanna book bind a Valentine’s Day card.
