Traveling and settling in

This week was my 3rd official week in Geneva and I think I am starting to get a hang of things. I know how to get to most places using public transportation and I have spent more than enough time in Swiss grocery stores. I buy some of my fruits and vegetable at the weekly Sunday farmer’s market. They have hard to find fruits and veggies like mangoes and avocados (a fruit?) for much less than in stores. I’ve visited nearby towns and have planned to travel to other parts of Europe.

I am really starting to feel like a local. Part of the reasons for this is how easy Geneva is to navigate. The city is pretty small so I am able to spend most of my days just walking around. I’ve picked out the places I plan on frequenting while living here; libraries, cafes, bookstores, etc. I even picked out a favorite park bench. I have particularly enjoyed Geneva’s museums specifically the Center of Contemporary art which houses three different museums in what is essentially a really large warehouse in the middle of the city. The building is very artsy (for lack of a better word) and kind of weird. But I enjoy being in the space.

I have also begun decorating my room just to make the place feel more like my space. I am not done yet so I won’t show you but I will whenever I am done. I am living in a student residence with other students from universities around Geneva. This is really great because I have been able to make friends with local students as well as students from all over the world. I’ve already made some good friends. Although I am living in a student residence, it doesn’t feel like living in a dorm as I am much more independent. I even cook most of my meals myself, which if you know me is impressive.

I traveled a little bit outside of the city this week. I went to Lausanne, a city that is about 45 minutes away from Geneva by train and the Olympic capital. I spent most of the day visiting museums (as I do best) and taking in the city. We also visited the Lausanne cathedral which was built in 1215. I included a photo of me in front of its magnificent doors. This is probably the oldest building I have ever been in. Hopefully, I’ll be able to visit even older ones in the future.

Until next time,

Laïssa
