I couldn’t come up with a title that correctly encapsulated my awesome weekend. This past weekend was Fall break and took the opportunity to take a much-needed trip home. While home, I attended a panel discussion about the life of one of my favorite writers, Toni Morisson. I was deeply affected by her death and hoped that this event would serve me well. It did! I had a great time and learned so much from the speakers. One of them was another one of my favorite writers, Edwidge Danticat. I got to speak to her briefly (!!) after the panel. As a Haitian, her writing has inspired me so much. She was very kind and encouraged me to keep writing. I was so excited I got the chance to speak to her that literally screamed when I left the room.
I spent the rest of that day with my sister. We ate at a Haitian restaurant and got desert. It was a great day!
I’ve been spending the rest of the weekend doing homework and catching up with my family. I have also been spending a lot of time watching movies. I borrowed a video camera from the Knapp Technology center and have been using it to film different aspects of my home life. I think this is a project I’ll continue doing. I don’t know what I plan on doing with the footage but maybe it will develop into something interesting. It’s been a great weekend to reset and think about what I want the rest of my semester looks like.
until next time,
Laïssa
