Singing Through Midterm Season

I had my first (and only) midterm this week, an in-class essay and some short answer questions in my peace and justice studies class. To clarify, since “midterm” at Wellesley can refer to any test/problem set/essay between the start of classes and finals, it was an actual midterm. The syllabus said “midterm.” The professor said “midterm.” That was this past Tuesday, the same day I had a computer science quiz and an environmental studies group project due. And on Thursday, I gave a group presentation about Framingham and turned in my first paper of college in my sociology class. (I’m not sure how I got this far without writing a paper, but I’m not mad.) These deadlines had been on my planner for a while, but they came up fast. It felt good to get things done.

I went to Cambridge on Sunday to watch our varsity boats completely slay Head of the Charles. The first boat came in second place, the best Wellesley has ever done at HOCR, and it was incredible to scream/cheer/wave from Eliot Bridge as they came through toward the finish line. I can’t wait to see what my team accomplishes this spring.

Back to campus after HOCR meant back to work. That night, I picked up my guitar to practice for a bit before studying P&J with my roommate. But our door was open, and some neighbors heard me playing, and sooner or later a bunch of us were standing two doors down, serenading a friend who’d been sick all day. Other friends heard our racket and came to join. I don’t know how long we spent singing on hoarse voices—it definitely cut into the time I’d scheduled for midterm review—but I didn’t want to leave. I’m a total planner, so spontaneity is good for me.

After our little concert in room 103, my roommate learned the words to one of my favorite songs, and we performed it at our dorm’s coffeehouse on Wednesday night. I stayed up past my bedtime to hear ghost stories, creative writing, a reading of the children’s book Three Little Pumpkins, and some original songs. It was well worth the drowsiness that followed on Thursday.

In other news, course registration for next semester is coming up in a few weeks. I have to take Musical Literacies to supplement my individual guitar lessons, but I can’t wait to pick my other three classes! For this fall, I chose four different classes that all looked interesting, and they overlap in unexpected ways. I’m putting together a blog post all about that, which I’ll post in the next few weeks. Stay tuned!

Fall!
