Hello hello!
I wanted to talk about one thing specifically for my post today: WELLESLEY CLASS OF 2024!!!! You look amazing from here, and we can’t wait to meet you. Although spring open campus is canceled this year, I wanted to share 20 wonderful things to get our prospies (aka you, admitted student, reading this!) excited for Wellesley. I’ll share the first half this week, and the last half next week, so stay tuned!
10 reasons to get excited for next year at Wellesley
- First and foremost, get ready to meet your lifelong friends. Your classmates, dormmates, teammates will challenge, inspire, and believe in you. Even as a junior, I am blown away by all the wonderful people I meet on this campus. As someone once put it, “Wellesley friends hit differently.”
- I’m not going to lie, the academics at Wellesley can be challenging. But as an accepted student, you’ve demonstrated academic success in the past, and will in the future! At Wellesley, you will have professors who are there to support you all the way. The professors at Wellesley are nothing short of brilliant: they want you to thrive, and they want you to succeed. Get ready. You’ll get to explore your interests in niche topics (take a look at the course browser to get inspired) and have a great support system along the way.
- The Traditions. Hoop-rolling! Class Colors! Boston Marathon! Traying! Stepsinging! And my particular favorite: Flower Sunday. During Flower Sunday, each first year is matched with a Wellesley big sibling (a sophomore, junior, or senior). First year students then receive flowers from their big, welcoming them into the Wellesley community. Together on the first Sunday of the school year, bigs and littles attend a multifaith program filled with music, song, and dance in the Houghton Chapel and Multifaith Center
- There are so many amazing ways to get involved on (and off!) campus. If you’re interested, a great place to start would be to look at Student Organizations. You can explore a dance org, college government, debate, basically anything.
- All the great study spots. Wellesley has so many nooks to hunker down and finish problem sets, or curl up with a good book. My favorites include the Art Library in Jewett, the Anderson Forum in Lulu (complete with a 24/7 fireplace), El Table, and the Shafer Common Room.
- Physical Education, Recreation and Athletics (PERA). Wellesley has a P.E. requirement for all students. Before you groan in protest, wait! There are so many amazing classes you can take (for free!). Spin, dance, swim, jog, meditate, stretch, and play. The options are limitless. Students also hold instructional classes multiple times a day, so you can explore strength training, cardiovascular fitness, barre, and more. The KSC (sports center) is also beautiful, complete with a state-of-the-art swimming pool. If that’s not enough, you can also rent out sports/game equipment (like tennis rackets) with your friends, and even take kayaks out on Lake Waban during the warmer months. Which brings me to my next point…
- Our Campus (it has a lake)! Beautiful in all seasons, that’s all I can say. And, complete with a hiking trail around Lake Waban.
- Boston! Only 40 minutes away. Jump on the Local Motion shuttle (it’s every hour, and free on the weekdays, $3 on weekends), and explore the Shining City Upon a Hill. So many museums, parks, restaurants, adventures await you.
- Career Education: everything from internship/industry support, fellowship guidance, volunteer opportunities, and more. Browse the website for all the available options (you won’t be disappointed).
- All of the amazing events and lectures on campus – Speakers come from all areas of academia, industry, and more. Topics range from Surveillance Capitalism to The Story of the Only Black Passenger on the Titanic, and from Design Thinking to Education and Economic Policy. The brightest minds, here to speak to you! You’ll be guaranteed to learn something new. Take a look here for more information.
In the end, this is just a small list of reasons why Wellesley is so special. I find myself constantly inspired by Wellesley, and always empowered to try new things. What more could you ask for?
