Hello beautiful people,
“One good thing about music, when it hits, you feel no pain” – Bob Marley.
Whenever I put my airpods in, I get into my zone. Music has become my superpower, charging me with the motivation and strength to conquer every day. One song in particular is meaningful to me: the 2019 Soca hit song Famalay (Family) by Bunji Garlin, Machel Montano, and Skinny Fabulous, my fellow Caribbeans. It makes me reflect on the need for both Caribbean and global unity. A particular verse that resonates with me is:
“Well let me tell yuh one time
Family is family
And dat different from bloodline.”
This verse encapsulates what family signifies in the Caribbean: embracing people with a non-judgemental, loving approach and treating people equally. The way Caribbeans embrace each other is a foundational part of who I am.
Here are some other songs that brought me through the semester:
- “7 rings” by Ariana Grande is my confident “That Girl” song. “I see it, I like it, I want it, I got it”, my powerful reminder that once I put my mind to anything I can achieve it and I can unapologetically create the life that I want.
- “Blessings” by Nicki Minaj ft Tasha Cobbs Leonard. This one hit deep on days when I felt overwhelmed but still grounded in purpose. It helps me recharge and serves as a reminder that: God didn’t bring me this far to leave me.
- Imagine, “Cool as the breeze” by Chronixx playing while you’re sitting by Lake Waban journaling. This song is my daily reminder that I need to just breathe.
- “Sweet, Honey, Buckin” by Beyonce and Shaboozey is my dancing and happy mood song. This song screams Southern spice and makes
- “Toast” by Koffee, my morning theme song whenever I put on my outfit and wanna hype myself up! This song has my daily motto, “Gratitude is a must!”
See you next week!
Best,
