I can’t believe I’ve reached the halfway mark of my adventure in China already! It seems like I just got here yesterday. The weeks here just fly by. Probably because I’m so busy (be it studying grammar or the wonderful world of Beijing).
This week, my roommate took me to see an art exhibition near my school. She really likes art. It was funny because she knew a lot more about the American artwork than I did! My favorite section of the exhibition was the tradition Chinese scrolls. That’s never something you see in museums at home.
After our trip to the exhibition, we went out to eat lunch at a tradition Nanjing style restaurant. Xiao Xiao wanted me to try the characteristic foods of that region so she ordered for me. She kept telling me, “What I ordered for you isn’t noodles. You’re going to think its noodle but its not noodles.” When it came, I looked at her and said, “This is definitely noodles.” It turns out that they’re actually some kind of bean starch. In English we’d probably just call them clear noodles, or I guess “bean noodles,” but in Chinese they have a totally different word for it!
A group of American students and I went to an open market on the other side of the city, as well. Stalls there had everything from small trinkets to giant hand woven tapestries. It was so cool to see because everything there from the cheapest trinket to the most expensive products were all things you would never see in the US. I love that about China. Its all so incredibly different here. Everything feels totally new.
Well, that’s mostly all the fun things I did this past week. Other than that it’s been a lot of studying for me! This week is our midterm! Wish me luck!
I’ll leave you with this:
