Hello hello!
Happy Labor Day! How it is already September?!
I’m currently sitting in my sunny living room doing research on Columbia Sportswear for a stock pitch I’m giving one week from today at a Goldman Sachs networking/interview session. They’re flying me to New York AND putting me up in a super sweet hotel! All for a girl who might intern for them next year…
I’m also listening to Renegades by X Ambassadors. It’s very soothing and has put me in a nice calm mood…
My Oxford visa documents and other forms are all in their envelopes and ready to be mailed off! I’ve already begun to hear from my Oxford college, Mansfield, and my “college family”. It’s super cute, I have a “college mom” and “college dad” who are just other students at Mansfield. And I also have a whole host of grandparents, aunts, uncles, and 5(ish) cousins, according to my “dad”, Davo. Hahaha.
Also got to skype with le boyfriend yesterday! MIT is in the midst of rush and ADPhi is in the most chaotic state it will ever be in for the rest of the year. I believe the brothers and freshmen went parasailing and jetskiing today–talk about sick events! Though I may be biased because Omar is also rush chair… 😉
Omg I went running yesterday because I seriously need some cardio in my life and…it was so sad. I couldn’t even run a whole mile! And the next day (today) my nonexistent abs and quads were super sore…
However, though my body may need some fine tuning, my brain certainly has been getting a workout! I’m currently reading this awesome book I started in high school but never finished, Start Something That Matters by Blake Mycoskie. It may sound like it has a corny title, but believe me, it’s worth the read. And what’s best is–so much of what I’m reading applies to the company I’m working for right now!! I love it!! This internship was supposed to only be 6 weeks long, for the period between my State Street internship and when I leave for Oxford, but I’m seriously considering continuing this job from abroad. I mean, I already work remotely anyway. What’s a 5 to 8 hour time difference? I wholeheartedly believe in what College Outside stands for. I also recently read Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, which is about a boy with many of the same ideals as me…. Also read parts of a book called Language: Its Power and Its Abuse; it’s a collection of essays edited by Lorraine Roberts. My favorite was a section about Black Speech, i.e. the “nonstandard” English of inner city African American kids in school. It essentially argued, with support from linguistics literature, that Black English is not “nonstandard”, but rather a dialect of English, just like non-Caucasian people all over America have their own version of English. (I can think of how my parents speak Chinese English, or “Chinglish” as my friends and I used to call it growing up.) It’s all in the perspective.
Anyway, I’m going to return to looking at Columbia’s balance sheets and income statements now. Let’s hope my stock pitch goes well! I’ll have to tell you about it next week in real time since it’s happening on Monday…
Cheers and hope everyone’s enjoying the last of their Labor Day weekend!
