On Saturday I did something I’ve never done before: I volunteered for Wellesley’s Day to Make a Difference! DTMAD is a day when Wellesley offers a number of different volunteer trips to different nonprofit locations in the greater Boston area. I chose to go to an organic farm/nature conservancy called Drumlin Farms.
I used to volunteer a lot in high school and I can’t believe I’ve yet to take part in this awesome tradition here at Wellesley.
At Drumlin, they told us a little bit about the history and mission of the farm. It’s also a park, as well as a wildlife rehabilitation center, where families and educational groups can come learn and interact with nature.
Our work consisted of harvesting all the crops on one field. We cut, gathered, boxed up, and loaded the produce onto trucks. The plants we were harvesting were mostly squash, decorative gourds, and pumpkins. I learned that there is such a thing as a white pumpkins. Who knew?!
Afterwards, we enjoyed lunch at a small picnic ground and took a quick tour of the animal farm. Before we left, we were each gifted two decorative gourds for all our hard work:)
It was a sunny, beautiful day and I’m so glad I had the opportunity to give my time and energy in service to such a great organization.
