Engineering for Dummies ;)

I am in love with my engineering class! I ended up enrolling in the course on a whim because I needed fourth class. I didn’t know what to take, and I honestly just really wanted to try something totally new.

Best decision I ever made.

The class is 2.5 hours twice a week, which seemed like a lot at first. But the time flies by! So far we’ve done awesome things like talk about vending machine user interfaces, reverse engineer (take apart) IKEA milk frothers, and design and create our own key chains using power tools!

So here I am: a senior, an East Asian Studies major, and now a novice engineer. THIS, my friends, is what a liberal arts education is all about.

This is Emma, my milk frother partner. She’s holding, you guessed it, a milk frother!

Here is our own milk frothing creation, which worked marginally well!

This is a fully taken apart frother. I learned how a motor actually works from this exercise.

And this is the key chain that I carved out of a metal strip with power tools! It’s a hedgehog (or a dinosaur if you prefer).

I’m learning that creating something that works, even a little bit, is a really rewarding process. I also love how group oriented all of our projects have been so far. It’s a great change of pace from the research based paper writing that I’ve become so used to. I’m excited to see what this class has in store for us next. If you want to follow along with me this semester as I learn more about the field of engineering, you can follow my ENGR111 blog here: http://baileytheengr.blogspot.com.

P.S. If you’re interested in Engineering, Wellesley does not offer a major but I have heard of students creating their own majors in the field of engineering by taking classes at Olin and MIT as part of their course load. If that is something you are serious about, you can make it happen!
