Subway Queen

Another crazy week of adventuring around Beijing has now come to pass. I spend a lot of time on the subway here. Even when all I do is go to work and back, it seems like a large portion of my day is spent hopping on and off (and on and off) the rails. And while everyone around me (for the most part) is busy tapping away at cellphones, I have no such luxury and have had to create new ways to amuse myself. *Gasp* The horror! 😉 I now have so much respect for all those persevering individuals who lived before the time of the smart phone. (Love you mom and Dad;) You dinosaurs, you!)

Anyways, here’s the deal: I find funky fellow passengers and try to sneakily snap a pic of whatever has caught my attention about them. Here are some of the gems I’ve procured thus far:

“Fun Graphic”! Things are often labeled in English here. It’s very trendy. I once saw a little boy wearing jeans that said “pants” on the leg.

Freeze! NYPD! You can run but you can’t hide, not even on the Beijing subway! (That man’s hat boasts “NYPD Police.”)

What you don’t like my new brief case? (Really not sure what this man is up to with a barbie backpack… He didn’t have any children with him.)

Okay, now the stuff you all want to hear about: internship updates!

How is your experience traveling halfway across the world to work for a magazine, so far, Caitlin?
Answer: As sweet as Gelato! 😉

All is well at City Weekend Beijing. I’m learning how to edit things on the website, and I’m continuing to write fun reviews. This week I reviewed three Gelato shops (see picture above). I’ve also published a few blogs for the magazine. Here’s a link to my latest one. (It’s about MERS arriving in China! *shivers* Thankfully it is nowhere near Beijing as of yet.)

I’m also working on a longer piece that is scheduled to be published in September in the Parents & Kids City Weekend publication. This is another offshoot of the magazine that targets families and explores topics such as education and family travel. The article I’m working on is about the things I wish I’d known/done before going to college. Working on it has been a very enjoyable reflection process thus far.

I will keep you posted with more lovely updates by me! Bye for now!
