Hello y’all! I am still under a shelter-in-place order here in Northern California, so my family has been staying inside except for walks around our neighborhood! We have had awesome weather this week –– yesterday it was 80º –– which is definitely making it harder to stay inside. Online classes are in full swing and I have established a solid routine. I’m beginning to work on final papers; I cannot believe that there are only a few more weeks in the semester! Despite missing the normalcy of classes on campus, I really do love seeing my professors and my classmates during the week on Zoom.
This week, I took on the challenge of giving my sixteen-year-old brother a haircut. Suffice to say I was extremely excited to be giving him a haircut, but he was understandably nervous. I’m pleased with my handiwork but despite asking multiple times was barred from sharing a photo of the finished product. Nevertheless, I will be leaving quarantine with a new and useful skill!
Last night my dorm House Council had ZoCo (Zoom House Council!) where we checked in with one another and had our weekly meeting. A highlight of House Council is the photos provided by our baby goat rep, my friend Cricket who is from Vermont. Her family raises goats, and Cricket shares a picture of one of the baby goats every week during House Council. I didn’t realize how much I missed our House Council meetings until we were all on the Zoom call together and it felt like we were back in the Shafer living room. Every day in quarantine I am reminded of my gratitude for the technology that allows me to connect with Wellesley friends from all over the world.
With all this free time, I’ve also been exploring the Wellesley archive which is open to all students and has documents and photographs from Wellesley’s history! The photographs are definitely one of my favorite part of the archive, especially since I recognize many of the locations. It is definitely worth a trip to the College Archive Image Gallery especially if you are missing your dorm and being on campus like I am!
As promised, I’m sharing what I plan on reading this week! At the top of my to be read stack are two nonfiction books, No Visible Bruises: What We Don’t Know About Domestic Violence Can Kill Us by Rachel Louise Snyder and Say Nothing: The True Story of Murder and Memory in Northern Ireland by Patrick Radden Keefe, as well as a young adult historical fiction pick called Lovely War by Julie Barry. April is also National Poetry Month, so I’m going to start reading collections from my favorite poets!
Wishing you and your family safety during these uncertain times <3
