Rose, Bud, Thorn, and Duck

Duck

We are moving into Week 3 of classes. It doesn’t feel like much has changed or that anything special is happening. For me, I have been settling into a rhythm with my classwork and extracurriculars. Most items on my schedule seem solid now, and I’m glad that the next weeks will be more predictable. For this post, I’ll do a quick round of “Rose Bud Thorn” – something my ZA tea class revived at a dinner conversation.

A Thorn is something that has been challenging you.

Right now is the same time that many are applying to research programs and summer internships as well as balancing coursework. I’m struggling with this a bit, especially since I’m changing paths to STEM rather than humanities, my resume is essentially a blank slate for the opportunities I am applying for.

In my classes as well, so many students are incredibly talented. Conservatory-level prodigious musicians are in my MUS201 class but I don’t even know what a coda is. It leaves me feeling inadequate, despite knowing that we are all on very different paths.

A Rose is a good thing that happened to you recently.

I caught up with a friend from a class we took together last semester and it was a lovely time. We bonded a lot in that class, and I didn’t realize how much I missed seeing her around. When we sat down at Bates, we both sighed. We were both so stressed out already – it was hilarious.

After finishing homework on Sunday evening, I decided to take two hours to call my dad and finally use this paint kit that the Office of Student Involvement (OSI) gave out. I painted a duck as shown. When my roommate Amy saw it, she didn’t have glasses on. She squinted at it, remarked that it looked like “a lemon with a tumor,” then put on her glasses and said “oh!” in realization that it was a duck, not a “lemon with a tumor.” I am very thankful to my friends for being tolerant of my lack of talents in the artistic department. Or any department, really.

A Bud is something that you are looking forward to.

Next weekend, my MUS201 class will be listening to Mozart and Bruckner at the Boston Symphony Orchestra. I’m so excited! I am close with a few people in the class too, so it’ll be like an extra fun field trip. 🙂

This Saturday though, my friends and I might go to the mall and eat at Cheesecake Factory. Or, we might have a chill night in with some TV shows, burritos, and board games. Spending time with friends always makes me happy – I’m glad to live on the same floor with them.

It’s Tea Season for societies! I’m in Zeta Alpha, and I’m really looking forward to going to a Tea tomorrow to meet some new people, make some new friends, and hang out with members that I haven’t talked to much before. It’ll be a fun time.

Now, I’m sitting in my room, wrapping up this blog post while watching some Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics figure skaters perform their short programs. I could watch them all day, but I am hungry and the dining halls close in 30 minutes. Here’s to hoping that this week will tide over smoothly, and see you next week. 🙂
