Marathon Monday

I have always described Marathon Monday (what the rest of the world celebrates as Patriot’s Day) as the happiest day of the year. Wellesley goes into full gear party mode starting at 9:00 a.m. and except for a brief nap around 3:00 p.m., it stays that way all day.

I began my day at 6:00 a.m. making brunch for my favorite TZE ladies in the kitchenette across from my room in Lake House. My relief pancake flipper Sophia came a few hours later, so I could jump in the shower and we wound up putting out this gorgeous spread.

From Lake House, we moved down to the Wellesley Scream Tunnel where I proceeded to lose my voice, gain a sunburn, and  give out some very salty kisses. I caught up with a TZE alum, leaned as far over the barricade as possible, and took advantage of all that positive energy. The smile lines on my face that didn’t get sunburned are proof of just how much I love Marathon Monday.

I waited to give a kiss to my boyfriend’s older brother and hopped the fence to jog with him for a little bit. Unfortunately jogging wasn’t part of his marathon plan, so I cut out of the running pretty quickly. An 8 minute mile pace isn’t so feasible in open toed sandals.

Festivities continued for me on Munger Meadow where I proceeded to stuff myself on our barbeque and seriously considered, but ultimately declined riding our mechanical shark.

After lazing in the grass, it officially became naptime and my friend Ariel and I headed back to the quad for some R&R.

We awoke to phones buzzing as our friends and family reached out to us to hear about the finish line explosions. Huddled together in a dorm room, hugging our friend who ran, and made it back safely, my friends and I listened to Obama’s address to the nation. By a miracle, no one we know was hurt, but the event is devastating for Boston.

Beyond the horror of the explosions, tweets like this one warmed our hearts.

The Wellesley community is showing its support by organizing blood and platelet donation runs, offering couches to sleep on and making donations. More information on how to help can be found here http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/04/15/help-boston-marathon-victims_n_3087183.html
