Midterms and Memes

As an English major, moments come few and far between where I can appreciate the world of physics or science in general. However, Einstein’s explanation of relativity strikes a chord with me, especially living in the Wellesley bubble. For those of you who who are quickly searching Wikipedia, I’ll save you some time because this is what you’ll find:

In physicsspecial relativity is a fundamental theory concerning space and time, developed by Albert Einstein in 1905[1] as a modification of Galilean relativity.

I’m talking more about Einstein’s simple definition of the relativity of time: Sit on a bench in a park talking to a pretty girl and one hour feels like a minute, but stick your hand in boiling water and one minute feels like an hour.

I haven’t figured out how Wellesley Standard Time works, but during midterm season there never seems to enough time for anything. Libraries and dining halls are packed with students crouching over their laptops or curling up with a book and a highlighter.

My midterms are less the study-for kind and more the research-and-write for kind. Lots of Middle English interpretation and analysis of W.E.B DuBois’ use of Sorrow Songs in his book Souls of Black Folk. I hope goes without saying that I’m not interpreting W.E.B DuBois’ use of Middle English. I hope that midterm brain fog isn’t spread that easily.

For a visual imagery of what Wellesley looks like during midterm period, I point you to the poignantly politically incorrect, but nonetheless tickling tumblr asianssleepinginlibraries.

This image comes from Wellesley’s own Clapp library, one of many beautiful and cozy places to study.

Even Wellesley College memes are in on the joke these days. This one comes from the courtesy of http://fuckyeahwellesleycollege.tumblr.com/

Now perhaps it would be to the benefit of we Wendy Wellesley’s to spend less time checking our internet memes and more time with our nose in books during midterm season. But one laugh will only take a minute. Which will turn into an hour. Which will still somehow feel like a minute. #wendyproblems.

When you do, don’t worry, not everyone at Wellesley is as weird as we are, we just like to keep things interesting.
