As part of my extracurricular activities I write and edit for the sports section of The Wellesley News. We have a bunch of on-campus publications including Counterpoint, Hey madeline and the Wellesley Review. There are certainly more, but as the former editor-in-chief of my high school paper, which just celebrated its centennial, I stuck to the news.
When I first came to Wellesley, I thought that I wanted to pursue journalism as a career. While I still work for the paper, I’m not totally sure it’s going to be my long term plan. This is one of the main reasons I’m so glad that I chose Wellesley as opposed to a journalism specific school. I had been looking at small liberal arts schools like Wellesley, journalism specific schools such as the Newhouse School at Syracuse, and a few city schools with strong writing programs.
I fell in love with Wellesley as soon as I set foot on campus and wound up applying and being accepted Early Decision. The fact that I still don’t know exactly what I want to do with my life reaffirms that decision. Liberal arts schools are great if your intended major or career is “undecided”.
Nonetheless, I still love being on a news team. I like the smell of a newspaper and the urgency that comes when we struggle Tuesday nights to get it out the door. Hence, Tuesday New Day. We have our main production night on Tuesdays and also plan the issue for the coming week. Meetings often run late, and even more often we have those over-tired laughing fits that will become a treasured part of your time at Wellesley. Luckily for me, after News Day comes Snooze Day because I do not have class until 11:30 tomorrow morning. I do however have indoor conditioning with the frisbee team from 9 to 11 tonight.
As the semester is wrapping up, exciting things are still happening. There is Tri-Society formal on Saturday, the Davis Museum is hosting a ‘Stache Bash and the English department colloquium is happening this week.
