The One With Going Home

Hi! Today I wanted to talk a bit about… going home. As someone who is very close to my family and very much loves NYC, I knew leaving home to go to college would be very hard for me. However, I really wanted to try something different for these four years of my life, and venture out. Luckily, I haven’t gotten homesick as much as I thought, and I’ve been able to visit home pretty frequently.

The good thing about going to school near a major city, such as Boston is that there are plenty of affordable and accessible options for going home. Boston and NYC are not too far away from each other, and are typically only about a 4 hour drive. One could opt to take a plane for a faster trip, but it is definitely more costly. The train (such as amtrak) is also an option that is a bit more moderately priced. However, personally I have found the bus to be the best way to get to NYC. I would say most students who are going to NYC to go home, or just for a fun weekend trip tend to take the bus. There are a lot of private bus companies, and most leave from South Station, the main train/ bus station in Boston. I typically like to use Mega Bus because it is cheap and reliable. You can get to South Station from Wellesley by taking an Uber, or taking the Wellesley Bus to Kendall and then taking the T (red line inbound) to the South Station stop. Overall it’s super accessible, and can be really cheap depending on what day you are traveling, and if you plan ahead. Alternatively, I’ve noticed a lot of students at Wellesley offer rides, especially to NYC, if they have extra seats in their cars. If you keep a lookout on the Facebook group for rides, you can often find someone offering one.

Overall, I have found Wellesley to be in an ideal location, because it allows me to experience a very different environment, while also being close enough to home, that I can easily visit whenever I want to. For example, this weekend I am visiting home to attend my cousin’s wedding, which is a traditional Pakistani wedding, taking place over multiple days. It’s been great being home for the festivities, and not having to miss this important event!
