My ASTRO physics class recently took a trip to the Haystack Observatory. The trip was on a Saturday, so my class of about 8 people and my professor piled into a Wellesley van and drove there. On the way there and back, we talked about black holes, dark matter (which is what our class is focused on) and the possibility of discovering alien life. We had a lot of fun at the observatory. We went there to look at a Small Radio Telescope and take some data. While there, we got a tour of the awesome facilities. The astronomy geek in me came out during the trip and I took a lot of pictures.
These sets of photos are of outside the observatory. That big golf ball looking object is actually Haystack’s Radio Telescope. Though it may not look like it in the pictures, this thing is massive. We went inside of it and were in awe of its size.
Inside the Observatory was also very cool. Pictures below. The pictures show the construction of the Radio Telescope.
The pictures show the construction of the Radio Telescope. I am not sure if some of you will get this reference but the facility itself made me feel like I was on the set of “Stranger Things”.
We were at the observatory for about 3 hours, I do wish we could have stayed for a little longer.
