WZLY is Wellesley College’s student-run radio station. Students have shows on the station where they play music or have interviews. After a semester of interning, each intern can get their own show. There are tons of DJ’s on board and they play all types of music. It’s a great group of people to be with.
I spent last semester interning for the station in order to become a DJ. This semester, I officially become one. (Yay!). My shows are on Wednesdays at 3 pm. I don’t have a great DJ name or even a name for my hour on the station. (I’ll try to think of one). But, it is really cool to hear yourself on the radio. On the show, I get to be creative and choose what I want to play on air or give a rant about. I have sent the link to listen to all my friends so they can share in my excitement. Some of them think I’m weird. But think, isn’t it a cool introduction. “By the way, I have my own radio show.”
Below are some shots of inside the studio.
So far, I haven’t done much but play some of the music I enjoy. However, in the future, I want to feature interviews with professors or just interesting people. I don’t know if you can tell but I am very excited for the future of this venture.
As part of WZLY, DJs also have to be on a committee that supports the station. I am on the Record Library committee where we try and shelve all the CDs and records that the station has received over the years. There are a lot of CDs. A lot of people have sent their mixtapes or debut albums for the station to play.
Being on that committee is quite interesting. It’s like looking through your parent’s old stuff, they are a lot of great vintage items to be found but also many things that are just weird.
Whenever we find an unusual album we play it to some interesting results.
