Settling in and Seeking out

Here is this week’s playlist: http://8tracks.com/adindew/ah-yes

Hi there!

A little over a month has passed since I first arrived at Wellesley. I am still amazed at how beautiful this place is, especially at around noon when I’m having lunch at the Lulu Chow Wang Campus Center. So far that’s where I’ve found the best food, although Bates Dining Hall is a close second. Yep, it’s only a matter of time before the Freshman15 starts showing…

(my diet is very carb-heavy here..)

It gets pretty cold at night and stays cold in the mornings (already!!). It was 8 degrees Celsius this morning as I was walking over to the Science Center for my Lab class. I’m getting pretty nervous about winter — Tokyo gets cold, but from what I’ve heard it’s nothing in comparison to winters over here. I will surely keep you all updated on my battles with the weather as temperatures continue to drop.

So my friends and I decided to go on an impromptu trip to Rhode Island last weekend. We saw some high school friends and toured Providence for a bit, and walked around Brown University’s campus as well. Brown is located at the top of a hill, so we had to do a bit of walking (my calves appreciated it the next morning), but the school itself  was not too far from the rest of the Providence area. It was pretty, but Wellesley wins easily in the pretty-campus-contest.

It made me realize again how removed Wellesley was from the busy city life I’m used to. One month away is long enough for me to realize how much I love my hometown, Tokyo – where convenience stores are open all hours of the night, public transportation is consistent and reliable, where I could have Ramen, Curry, Pizza, Korean Barbeque, TGI Friday’s whenever I pleased. A lot of my thoughts are centered around food …  but what I’m trying to say is that it’s an adjustment. Wellesley is a very cozy and quiet town, and the campus is very peaceful, considering that there are over 2000 college-aged people living here. I definitely have some exploring to do around here since I’ve spent the majority of my weekends off campus!

I’m still trying to balance settling in to life on campus, and seeking opportunities for work and social life elsewhere. It’ll take me a while until I get it right. Right now I’m noticing that I need to start focusing more on my school work since it takes a lot more time and effort to complete work that meets the expectations of my professors! I like the pressure, though. This kind of challenge is what made me choose Wellesley and what’ll hopefully keep me going for the next four years!
