This is my first blog post EVER, so bear with me!
My name is Katie Eyring and I am a member of the class of 2014 at Wellesley College (not quite comfortable with calling myself a junior yet, so weird!).
I’ve been back on campus for a week now. Somehow it feels like I’ve been here for 2 months and 2 minutes at the same time. We’re finally getting settled into a double on the 5th floor of Tower Court. Here’s a peek at the room:
I’m living with Camylle, my best friend, and the same person that I’ve been living with since my first year at Wellesley! We were randomly paired up in a triple (with a lakeside view and 2 closets, I might add) our first year and became fast friends. You’ll find that happens a lot at Wellesley. I’m still close with almost everyone who lived on my floor my first year (Tower Court 2 West). We even got our first-year RA a shirt with a picture of all of us on it. Slightly creepy, very cute.
Classes have begun and the excitement around campus is almost palpable. First-years are excited to see what Wellesley has to offer. Seniors can’t wait to start their final year in college! As a neuroscience major, I’m taking a class or two for my major and 2 classes outside of my field (most Wellesley students take 4 classes). I’ve vowed to only take notoriously well-praised classes; ideally, courses in which the professor is teaching in his or her own specialty. It’s worked out pretty well so far! Past classes include a sociology class on conformity and deviance, recommended to me by another sociology professor (we analyzed a Jay-Z song, learned about Wellesley’s own history, and even had convicted felons come and talk to the class about their experiences) and a course on the Virgin Mary (we looked at the Virgin Mary through primary and secondary literature, music and art). This semester, I’ll be taking genetics, gender and development (a sociology course taught by my Wellesley advisor) and a course on inequality (dually taught by two of the best professors in the philosophy and economics departments). I CANNOT tell you how excited I am for this inequality course. It’s the first time this course has been offered and one of the first dual-taught courses Wellesley has ever offered—will write all about it!
On Saturday night, I went into Coolidge Corner in Brookline, MA with a couple of friends. We grabbed dinner at a savory crepe place before going to see “For a Good Time Call” at the Coolidge Corner Theater. It was only my second time in Coolidge Corner, but it seems like a really fun, young, hipstery (is that a word?) place. Also, for everyone with a sweet tooth, the crepe place had a great frozen hot-chocolate shake, cinnamon-infused crepes and strawberry-banana nutella crepes. I should warn you that I’m more than a little obsessed with food, I’ll be writing from an Italian place soon. On another note, the theater was incredible, here’s a snapshot:
I believe the theater has been active since 1933. We sat in a super spacious theater with comfy armchairs. It was a totally different movie-experience than the one that I’m used to and the film was hilarious. I’d say the relationship between the two women is totally reminiscent of Wellesley friendships.
Back on campus, Sunday morning was Flower Sunday, Wellesley’s oldest tradition. Current students get paired up the newest class to help them navigate Wellesley’s ways. Big sisters usually surprise their little sisters with flowers in the morning before walking over to Houghton Chapel for the ceremony (the administration welcomes students to the new year and a number of spiritual and cultural organizations perform).
