A few weeks ago, one of my first-year friends on the crew team asked for advice on training for a half marathon. She wanted to run 13.1 miles around Wellesley just for fun (I know, we’re an odd bunch), and she planned to do it the first Sunday in December. Yesterday, while I was drafting my stand-up set for my comedy class final project, I decided what the heck, I’d run with her. So I met her and two fellow seniors at 7 this morning, and we ran 13.something miles. I combined three of my favorite trails to make a route. It was chilly but sunny. I’m slow and steady, so I tried to pace everyone. Around mile 11, Cora said, “This is a big ‘you can do more than you think’ moment.” Neither she nor Gabby had ever run more than 6 miles. And together, we did half a marathon.
My coaches’ winter training plan has a 2k test this Tuesday, and my legs will still be tired. But I didn’t want to let an off-season rowing machine test control what I do for fun. My hips are tight, and my heels are sore, but whatever my 2k time is on Tuesday, I’ll be glad I hit the woods with Gabby, Cora, and Alison.
After a quick breakfast and a warm shower, I went into Boston today to get donuts and walk around. I wound up breaking my daily step record. By the time I grab dinner and get back to my room, I’ll be at 47,000 steps.
On the school front, the semester is winding down quickly. My writing class is in full revision mode, and my other three classes have shifted toward working on or presenting our final projects. I’m not excited for the semester to end, because then I’ll be halfway through my senior year, and I don’t like how that sounds.
