A Two-Brunch Sunday

It has been a whirlwind since I last wrote! These past two weeks have been busy with school and fun, and I can’t really remember if last semester was equally busy. But I’m staying on top of my work, doing fun things, and usually getting (almost) enough sleep.

Wednesday night, Wellesley Fresh put on their annual chili cook-off. Staff from each of the five dining halls prepared massive quantities of chili and set up in Tishman Commons, where students came through to taste-test and vote for their favorite. Pomeroy was the only dining hall to make a vegetarian chili, so I filled my bowl with theirs. You’d think that after Pom won last year, another dining hall–one of four others–might think to make a veggie chili, but nope. Pom got my vote. In the end, they didn’t win, but I had myself a fantastic dinner. There was a DJ. Wellesley is strange. It was a lot of fun.

Today, I had the wonderful dilemma of choosing between two brunches. I ended up going to both! (As my brother would say, ¿por qué no los dos?)

A couple weeks ago, I signed up for a book club sponsored by the Newhouse Center. They gave us free copies of Gish Jen’s new book The Resisters, and today about twenty students and a few faculty members came together to discuss the novel and munch on breakfast food. To avoid spoilers, we focused on the first chapter, and somehow we spent over an hour unpacking those first twenty pages. I thoroughly enjoyed the book and the gathering, and I’m looking forward to Gish Jen’s talk here on campus this Thursday. Yay for pleasure reading! Do it!

Afterwards, Hillel bagel brunch and the promise of hamantaschen distracted me from my walk to the library. The dough had already been made, so I rolled it out and put together some vegan hamantaschen. Homework is every day, but Purim only comes once a year.

The chocolate ones turned out ok! The jams had some explosion issues. Happens to the best of us.

Tonight I’m off to see a concert in Harvard Square with a friend, and then it’ll be Monday again. With two weeks of classes until spring breaks, things are in full swing.

In other news, I’d like to welcome my fellow Shafer first floor first-year Caroline to the blog world! Check out what she has to say here.
