Hometown Observations, Yom Kippur, and Sports Photography

It has been a crazy week! I spent most of the weekend doing work, but on Sunday, I treated myself to brunch in Cambridge and hung out working at Whole Foods. It’s always nice to get off campus, and exciting to familiarize myself with different parts of the city.

On Tuesday, my groupmates and I took the commuter rail two stops over to my hometown of Framingham, which we’re studying in our sociology class. We walked around town, paying attention to signs geared toward the immigrant community. It was interesting to see my own town through that lens, rather than just as a passive passerby. We stumbled upon a really cute cafe with vegan muffins. I need to go back.

Wednesday was Yom Kippur. I didn’t fast, but I did go to a family friend’s house for a delicious break-fast dinner. I love being close enough to home to go to things like that. It was a bit of a late night (which, for a rower, means going to bed at 10:00). But I ended up getting to sleep in the next morning for an indoor workout rather than a row. It was good timing.

Thursday and today have been a bit more calm. This morning, since I’d finished my reading for all my classes, I spent the bus ride to and from the river editing photos. I work as an athletic photographer on campus. Until now, I mostly took artsy and nature photos, but this was a great opportunity to pick up a new skill and make some money off it. And besides, watching sports games is a lot of fun! I love seeing my classmates on the field and recognizing athletes around campus after taking their photos.

My favorite photo from Tuesday’s soccer game!

It’s officially fall break! Shabbat tonight was at the rabbi’s house. As always, it was a good time with good people and good food.

In other news, the crew team has our first regatta tomorrow! Check in next week for some rowing updates.
