Yesterday, I attended a lunch meeting for the class of 2014 at Harambee House, the house for students of African descent on campus. At the lunch, Dr Tracey Cameron, the director of Harambee House, Assistant Dean of Intercultural Education and advisor to students of African Descent (aka Super Woman), spoke to us about the importance of using all the resources available to us while at Wellesley. We made a list of the resources that students have access to and that we must use whenever we feel overwhelmed and helpless: our friends and family, older students, our professors, Dr Cameron, our deans, the PLTC, the Academic Peer Tutors in our residence halls, the Stone Center Counseling Service, Health Services, and the Center for Work and Service (CWS).
I can say that in my experience, making good use of all those resources can dramatically improve one’s feelings and well being. I have a better understanding of my professors’ expectations now that I make a conscious effort to attend their office hours, take advantage of the PLTC, talk to my Dean and use the CWS.
My professors are understanding and willing to work with me toward achieving my goal of making my junior year a smooth and successful experience. My dean, Dean O’Keefe is patient with me and helpful every time I go to his office – something I do quite often. I really appreciate the fact that he took time out of his busy schedule to come to my Tanner Conference presentation two weeks ago. Ted Hufstader, the program director for internships at the CWS and an advisor for students interested in public health, was my Tanner advisor. Since I was accepted into the Albright Institute last spring and I must participate in a “global internship” next summer as an Albright Fellow, I have asked Ted for help with the search for my next summer internship. We have already come up with a list of places where I’d like to work. I look forward to finding out where I’ll be next summer and what I will be doing!
In other news, I started running sessions for my study on cultural and family values and interpersonal relationships in my 312R class (Study Methods in Personality Psychology). My partner Joanna and I encountered some trouble with Qualtrics, the software we used to create our survey, during our first two sessions but we were pleased that all went well yesterday. I look forward to the next sessions and I can’t wait to analyze my results!
