On Saturday, I attended the Tri-Society Winter Formal in Alumnae Ballroom at Wellesley. The Tri-Society Formal is a bi-annual social event organized by members of three of the five societies on campus, namely Tau Zeta Epsilon (aka TZE, the arts and music society), Zeta Alpha (aka ZA, the literature society) and Alpha Phi Sigma (aka Phi Sig, the lecture society). The other Wellesley societies are Shakespeare (the theater society) and Agora (the political science society).
Some may describe societies as sororities, but they aren’t. Though sisterhood is an integral part of every society and we organize/ attend social events often, the focus of each society remains the interest (arts, music, literature, theater or political science) that binds its members. In TZE, for example, Tizzies (members of the society) organize art and music lectures four times a semester to remind the college community that “arts” is an integral part of our liberal arts education at Wellesley. We also do community service to give back to the community either here at Wellesley or in the greater Boston area.
Students can join societies from their second semester at Wellesley through a process called “tea-ing.” The tea-ing process is different for each society, but the central idea is that a student should attend teas to get to know the members and to determine if she wants to join the society. At the end of the tea season, the student is asked to fill out and to submit an application to one society. Should she fail to be admitted into that society, she may re-apply or she can apply to another society.
I’ve written about TZE in the past and I encourage you to check my previous posts to know what we’re about. For now, I’ll say that I enjoy formals because they provide an opportunity to get out of sweat pants, sweatshirts, jeans or even pajamas for some (!) in order to look nice (read: presentable) in pictures. At formals, we certainly have dinner and dance, but we also spend a lot of time taking pictures- possibly to remind ourselves that we can look nice when we’re not stressed about midterms and exams.
As fun as it was, the Tri-society Formal was the calm before the storm… This week, I have to: prepare for a presentation on my research findings in my Research Methods class (due Dec. 6), write my 25-page final paper for the Seminar on African women class (due Dec. 10), brainstorm and write two 3-page essays for my class on Environmental Justice (due Dec. 10), write my 7-page paper on the Rwanda conflict for my social psychology class (due Dec. 11), and run analyses and edit parts of my final paper for the Research Methods class (due Dec. 21 – thankfully!). Of course, there’s also regular homework to do. I’m beyond busy right now and hope that it all works out/ turns out to be fine.
Reminder for my readers who are prospective students: Less Than One Month Until The Early Evaluation Deadline of January 1st 2013. I applied EE and it was definitely one of the smartest decisions I ever made!
