We are now nearly done with our second week of school and I already feel like time is moving way too fast. I have had a busy couple of weeks. I am taking 4.5 classes (which is a little more than the usual 4), plus a P.E. Independent Study. I am loving my classes so far, though they can be quite difficult. I am in an interdisciplinary Peace and Justice Studies/Engineering class about the intersection of technology and social justice that is extremely interesting, but (given how long it has been since I last took Maths) some of the exercises can be difficult. I am also taking an Astronomy class to fulfil the Maths distribution requirement and a lot of the concepts are difficult for me to grasp, especially when they regard massive numbers that I haven’t really had to deal with in the past. So, despite not taking Maths for almost four years, I find myself taking two classes that require quite a bit of Mathematics. It will be an interesting semester. In addition to those, I am taking another interdisciplinary class, this time a Peace and Justice/Anthropology class called ‘Anthropology In and Of the City’, as well as a Sociology class called ‘Sociology of Human Rights’. Both of these classes are very interesting, though I prefer the Sociology class because it is what I love to study (note: my concentration is on Human Rights). The Anthropology class is really interesting, but I don’t think I am passionate about it. My .5 credit comes from an Independent Study I am doing for my major with my adviser, which consists of weekly meetings and writing assignments which will result in a ~20 page paper about my Experimental Education Component, which is basically my working experience with SUP the last two summers. Lastly, I am doing a P.E. Independent Study to fulfil the second half of my P.E. credit requirements. Given how much I have going on this semester, I decided to do an Independent Study rather than a class at Wellesley. This allows me to build up my own schedule around my other commitments. I am taking barre classes in Wellesley Square, and so far it is going really well! I am technically only required to take 20 classes to fulfil the Wellesley College requirement but I have been trying to go as much as possible. I am really hoping that I will be able to prioritize this throughout the whole semester, even as my schedule gets busier.
Last week was also busy because one of my best friends was visiting me. I met her in Belfast while we were both studying abroad at Queen’s University Belfast (QUB) and we became really close. She is from Slovenia, but she planned a trip to the States to visit me and another close friend in New York. It was lovely having her here! I really missed her and Belfast, and it was great to have some time to hang out with one of my favourite people in the world. She was great about dealing with my busy schedule, even when I worked 8-10 hour shifts at J.P. Licks, and I was even able to carve out some time to go into Boston and Cambridge and explore the city with her. She left me earlier this week. Although I was sad to see her go, I honestly needed the time to get my schoolwork done, so I am sure my grades will thank me. I gotta head to work now, but I promise an update next week. I will already have received a couple essay prompts that I can talk about. Exciting stuff!
See you all next week~
