Sophomore Year: Back in Action

Happy Wednesday everyone, and welcome to the Wellesley Student Blog! My name is Andrew (he/him), and I’m a sophomore here at Wellesley returning to the blog for my second year. For those of you who are returning readers, you might notice that the name and pronouns I use now are a little different from the ones you were used to last year. I learned a lot about myself during my time at Wellesley last year, and one of the things I learned was that I am a transgender man. I also learned that I am not a fan of calamari, I love french toast, and I can totally eat ice cream for every meal and not feel bad about myself afterwards (side note: today was the first day they’ve had gelato in the dining halls and the pumpkin spice blew my mind). Last year was a wild ride, and I’m looking forward to whatever this year throws at me.

For those of you who are new to the blog, I thought I’d give a little bit of an introduction! I am an as of yet undeclared English major and prospective Education Studies double major or minor, though I tend to switch major ideas and future plans pretty frequently so that is subject to change; right now I’d really like to work in children’s media, as an editor for children’s books or a writer for children’s tv shows, but who knows if that’s what I’ll want to do next week.

On campus, I’m an RA in Bates Hall and a junior member of the Guild of Carillonneurs, the group responsible for the bells playing up in Galen Stone Tower between classes. This year I hope to get a little more involved on campus as a lot of the orgs were offline due to the pandemic. Things seem to be getting back to some semblance of normality (knock on wood), and I’m so excited for all of the opportunities that will bring!

A couple others things about me are that I am a proud Iowan (g’awks!), an avid Muppet fan, and currently trying to teach myself how to play the guitar with very slight success.

Today marks my tenth day on campus this year, and I’m already feeling really good about this semester. I’ve made more new friends during my week of RA training than I did during the entirety of my first year, and everyday things seem to be getting better and better as more people move onto campus. This afternoon is our first big move-in date, with the domestic first years starting to arrive around 3:30. My floor is all upperclassmen, but I’ll be spending the next couple of days outside with my fellow New Dorms student leaders making sure our first years get the warmest welcome to campus possible!

Next Wednesday will be the first day of classes in the new semester, along with my first real convocation ceremony at Wellesley. For now, I’ll leave you with a picture of my floor decorations. Can you guess our theme?

Sending you joy,

Andrew
