Hitting Reset

I’m looking back through my Google calendar to see what happened this past week. Not going to lie, it was a long one. I think the combination of school work, pandemic fatigue, and constantly changing New England weather all culminated in a lot of stress and burnout. The hot water in Lake House also was acting a bit dodgy for a while, too, and that’s never fun. Luckily, after all the wave of deadlines (and the triumphant return of a warm shower), things have been looking up.

I’ve been thinking about finding ways to reset after a long week, and I came up with a few things I’ve found myself consistently doing. Here they are:

  • I took a solo walk around campus and the lake on Friday afternoon before my thesis meeting and it was absolutely wonderful. Whenever I take a walk, I like to have my music queued up and ready. It’s great for allowing me to not think about work for a while. Lately, I’ve been loving In The Midst Of It All (feat. Sam Wills) by Tom Misch, First Love / Late Spring by Mitski, Ways to Go by Zeph, & Sides of Me by Masego.
  • Honestly, after a long day or week, coming back to Lake House, showering (with working hot water), turning on my string lights, listening to jazz lo-fi, making a cup of tea, and laying on my bed doing absolutely nothing is more than enough.
  • On Thursday afternoon, while basking in the warm weather by the lake, I ran into a friend. We spontaneously had a 30 minute catch up and it was exactly what I needed.
  • Getting a matcha latte with coconut milk at the Emporium in Lulu really has the ability to turn around any day!
  • It seems crazy to write, but I’ve also found myself rereading some of my assigned philosophy readings. Recently, we’ve been talking a lot about specific answers to the meaning of life (some of which include achievement, love, authenticity, morality, art, living in the moment). Two of my favorite texts we’ve had to read have been This is Water and Pain Won’t Kill You. Funnily enough, they were both Kenyon College commencement speeches, given about five years apart. I highly recommend reading through them (even skimming)! They’ve given me a lot to think about lately.
  • Animal TikToks. No further explanation needed.

That’s all for now. I’m excited for warmer weather and all that’s to come (including a week long break in between terms). Only a few more weeks until the end of term 3!

We made it halfway through March,

Shreya
