My Term 1 Courses: A Full Plate

Hello hello!

Not going to lie, I had to look at my Google Calendar to remember what happened this past week. It was a busy one (when is it not?), complete with the first exam of my senior year, an interview, and plenty of meetings.

It’s the beginning of week 4 now, so I wanted to share a little about the classes I’m taking! Just a bit of background: in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, Wellesley adopted a new 7 week term system for this year. Two classes per term is considered to be a full course load, and two terms are the equivalent of one semester. We’re about halfway through term 1 now, and everything has been moving at a rapid pace.

I’m taking two and a half classes during term 1: Women and Health (WGST 204), Applied Data Analysis and Statistical Inference (QR/STAT 260), and my thesis (a half credit)!

So far, I’m enjoying my classes immensely:

  • Women and Health is especially interesting because it’s a multidisciplinary course that critically examines a broad range of concepts and issues that affect women and their health. The class counts towards my Health and Society minor, and I adore the professor (a Wellesley alum!). It’s also been fascinating to take the class while interning at the CDC, and seeing the connections between work and school.
  • My statistics course has been intense, but rewarding. It’s a course offered by the Quantitative Analysis Institute (QAI). We’re learning the statistical software R to hone our data analysis skills. My professor is brilliant and my classmates are inspiring. So far, we’ve covered everything from t-tests to data cleaning on R. We still have a lot to learn!
  • Finally, my thesis work has been off to a strong start! I worked on my thesis intermittently over the summer (including running a successful pilot study), but now it’s crunch time! I’m hoping to launch another pilot study before the end of this term and clarify my direction.

Other than academics, this year has been busy with extracurriculars too. In my next post, I’ll be delving into that a bit more, so stay tuned!

Sending you off with a San Diego sunset,

Shreya
