Shreya’s Summer Updates

Hello, hello!

The Lumpkin Summer Institute for Service Learning has been going swimmingly so far! In addition to attending a two hour seminar weekly and interning for 35 hours at our placement sites, Lumpkin interns are required to have dinner together once a week. The dinner usually takes place in one of our Northeastern dorms, or on sunny evenings, outside on the Northeastern green space!

Recently, on a Tuesday night, we decided to switch it up a bit and have a cohort dinner at Veggie Galaxy (a great vegan/vegetarian friendly restaurant that serves classic diner food!). There are nine interns in the Lumpkin program, all placed in vastly different non profit organizations across Boston. It’s always so interesting to debrief and chat over dinner, especially about similarities (and differences) between the different types of work we are all doing. For example, some Lumpkin fellows are placed at sites where they are directly serving populations. Other interns, like me, work at sites that have a broader, policy-focused approach. Still important, but vastly different experiences!

Other than that, my summer is progressing steadily. I recently saw the Lion King with my roommates (I got goosebumps during Can You Feel the Love Tonight), and Dear Evan Hansen at the Boston Opera House. Some context: I was obsessed with Dear Evan Hansen my senior year of high school – I vividly remember watching Ben Platt and the cast perform at the 2017 Tony Awards! My obsession mostly died down in college, but watching it live last week reminded me why I loved it so much. The cast was amazing, story still relevant, and by the second act, the entire theatre (including me!) was sniffling. My personal favorite songs from the musical: You Will be Found & Requiem.

I know it’s a short post this week, but don’t fret! My next few posts will go into more detail about what I learned this summer (internship and beyond!), as well as a list of some more exciting, inexpensive places to go in Boston!

Happy August,

Shreya
