Hello again! This past weekend was Discover Wellesley Weekend where prospective students (also known as prospies) spent the night and got to experience the life of a Wellesley student alongside us. While spending time chatting with various prospies interested in different majors, activities, and ways to get involved, the same three questions kept popping up. These questions are similar to ones that I also often get on tours and in information sessions and I figured it might be time to put them in writing. So, here they are…
I. What is the social life like?
I always equate it to a choose your own adventure book– it’s never the same and the choice is always yours. With Boston so close to our campus the options are seemingly neverending; there are parties you can go to, restaurants to try and shops to peruse. Our campus is also always buzzing. Each student-led organization on campus is required to host at least one all-school event meaning with over 180 organizations there is never a shortage of dances, cultural shows or lectures to attend. If that wasn’t enough, there are also plenty of people who have chill movie nights with friends or choose to study and prepare for upcoming test and midterms. In short–
II. Is it hard?
Yes, but it is so worth it. I am not just learning from the best in the classroom, the professors also care about me. They want to teach me how to be curious and excited about the material and ask questions that go beyond just the surface. In addition, when I am truly stuck and don’t have any idea what I am doing there are so many resources (like the Pforzheimer Learning and Teaching Center and office hours) that help me seek the answers I need and allow me to become more comfortable in my abilities.
It’s also incredibly inspiring to be surrounded by driven, smart young women who want to support you in any way they can which leads me to…
III. Why did you choose Wellesley?
I choose Wellesley pretty late in the game– like two weeks before senior year kind of late. I wasn’t sure if a historically all woman’s college was the right fit for me so I didn’t even consider Wellesley until I was essentially dragged here by my mom and a Wellesley Alum. That changed when I stepped onto campus and was met by the most incredible and welcoming admissions counselors and students who made me feel at home and at ease. It was the first time that had happened and so I trusted that feeling and applied ED (early decision). Now, as I look back on that semi-impulsive and extremely important decision, I truly believe that that feeling of home was created by two things.
- The People — Every single person I met on campus encapsulated either a quality I valued in myself or wanted to come out of college having gained. I knew that these strangers would someday become my siblings (as cheesy as that sounds0 and that I would leave college a better person, not just a more intellectual academic.
- The Rigor — Like I mentioned, Wellesley is certainly not easy, but I wanted to be challenged. I wanted to be excited by my classes and feel like I was learning new things everytime I stepped into a classroom while also questioning my prior beliefs. Wellesley gave me the space to regain my joy of learning.
TLDR; I think Wellesley is pretty great.
xoxo,
