Looking over my past posts, I realized that I’ve mostly focused on academic or extracurricular stuff. With that in mind, I want to change it up a little and write about what Wellesley students do for fun. It can take a little time to figure out what works for you and your friends. We’re not really a “party school”–you can commute into Boston or head to one of the nearby colleges pretty easily for that, but that’s not my thing–but there’s plenty to do on- and off-campus if you poke around a bit. I tend to be a bit of a hermit, but I’ve emerged from dorm-cave more often than usual this week, so here’s a quick recap of what an unusually outgoing week looks like for me:
-Went into Boston with my sister. She goes to Tufts, which makes it very easy for us to meet up in Boston. We got off for President’s Day and decided to take advantage of it. We grabbed lunch at a burger place on Harvard Square, went to a protest that was also in Harvard Square, and went to the Harvard Museum of Natural History. They had a collection of molded, meticulously accurate glass flowers that were once used as models. It was so realistic that it kind of slipped into uncanny valley category. Here’s me being a little suspicious that they’re actually real flowers and we’re being bamboozled:
-Met up with a friend for our weekly viewing of Last Week Tonight. At this point, we’ve watched that show for so long that we can predict John Oliver’s punchlines. (“…Cool.” Fans will get it.) Oliver’s slow descent into semi-nihilism over the years has been a little grim to watch, but it’s also a little comforting? Who else can make us laugh about Brexit?
-Weekly Pub Night. You may have heard that the town of Wellesley is “dry.” Well, we’ve got an on-campus bar and it offers rosé cider at $3 a pint. A few friends and I meet every Thursday for a drink, a catch-up, and sometimes a game of darts. We’re getting better at the darts–we almost always hit the board.
-Belated Galentine’s Day get-together. Valentine’s Day was a while ago, but it’s never too late for a Galentine’s Day celebration. My first-year mentor group–you’ll get one of those next year–has gone for brunch for Galentine’s Day every year. Our schedules this year have necessitated a shift to dinner, so we’re headed into town to visit a Wellesley favorite: Lemon Thai. (I hope you like Thai food, because Wellesley loooves Lemon Thai.) It’s sad that this is last of the Galentine’s Day outings, but I’m looking forward to going out one last time tonight. We’re going to Truly Yogurt after (actually an ice cream shop) because of two very important shared principles: Truly’s is better than JP Licks, always and forever, and people who don’t eat ice cream in the winter are a bunch of cowards.
-Going to a Film Society screening. Every Friday and Saturday, the Wellesley Film Society puts on two movies back-to-back. It’s free for Wellesley students. They’ve screened everything from Mad Max to Moonlight to the movie I’m going to see with a friend tomorrow night–If Beale Street Could Talk. I’m usually a Netflix person, but sometimes it’s nice to see a movie on a screen bigger than my laptop. Wellesley also has a shuttle that will take you to the nearest mall, which has a movie theater, if you want to see something a little more recent.
-Trip to the MFA. Assuming my sister ever flipping gets back to me (update: okay, she texted me while I was editing this), we’re going to find a time to go to the MFA this weekend. The MFA (free for Tufts and for Wellesley students!) is putting on an Ansel Adams exhibit and we’re both fans of photography, so we’re trying to make it there before the exhibit closes.
-Oscar Watch Party. I’m not 100% sure this is going through, but my friends from the Wellesley News have been talking about getting together and watching the Oscars. If Green Book wins, we may riot.
So that’s a busy week’s worth of fun. I also jammed in reading several books for class, filling out a job application, taking a walk around the lake, and a reasonable(-ish) amount of sleep. Hope your weeks were equally busy!
