So I’m in the BEST mood! Something to know about Wellesley women: scratching something of the To-Do list makes us VERY happy. I just sent my major declaration form to the Psychology Department chair, who will approve it (he told me so!) and sent it to my major advisor, who will also approve it. So, by this time tomorrow, I may no longer be “Temple Price, 2013, Undeclared Major” I will be “Temple Price, 2013, PSYCHOLOGY MAJOR” Yeah, that’s right, I’m fancy.
If you’ve scrolled through my blog or seen my bio, you may think to yourself Hey, I thought she was already a Psych major. Well, although I self-identified as a psych major from the beginning of my time here, the form makes it official.
Now, that’s my journey. I took AP Psych in high school, fell in love, and now we’re getting married. My career goal is to work in journalism or some form of communications. Wellesley does not have a J degree, but I’m banking that the liberal arts format and the excellent Center for Work and Service will more than make up for that. And yeah, I can’t ignore the clout that comes with a Wellesley degree.
It doesn’t work like that for everyone though. I have one friend that started out on Team Psych with me, then it was Sociology, I think there was an Africana Studies phase, and she’s finally settling down with American Studies. If she changes again, that’s cool too!
The beauty of liberal arts curriculum is that it isn’t limiting. You do a lot of what you love, a little of what you like, and a little of what you need. Exploration is encouraged – you don’t have to select a major until March of your sophomore year. I needed to declare by December because I’m applying for a semester away – again, I’ll tell you where if I get it!
So, if you know exactly what you want to major in, great! Come to Wellesley, do that, and discover other passions! If you have NO IDEA or you like a lot of things, great! Come here and find what makes you tick!
Choosing a major shouldn't be scary! Just like me as a tiny mummy!
