Last weekend was a great one for Wellesley! Well, I’m
biased. Friday was Ethos’ annual Quintessence Day. Allow me to explain.
Ethos is Wellesley’s organization for students of African descent,
of which I am a member. In February, we host a number of events in honor of
Black History Month. Quintessence is the crown jewel of the month. An influential
Black woman comes in a gives a lecture to the college community at large. In the
past, Ethos has hosted icons like Nikki Giovanni and Angela Davis.
Which brings me back to last weekend. MC Lyte was here! And
how appropriate – she was the first female rapper to have a gold single, and
the first female solo rapper to be nominated for a Grammy! She gave a great
talk, she answered some of our questions, and she D.J.’ed at our after party.
It was all very exciting, and I had been looking forward to “Q
Day” all month. I enjoy the weeks of anticipation leading up to Wellesley
events almost as much as the events themselves!
Not everyone got to meet MC Lyte, so I'm not in this pic…but don't they look pumped?
