A Musical Start to the Semester!

Hello Blog,

Let’s do the final run down of classes I’m taking for my last semester!

  • CHEM 341: Inorganic chemistry – my final chemistry class at Wellesley! At this point, I’ve exhausted most of the chemistry classes in the department, and this is supposed to be a really fun chemistry course to end on. So far, I’m really enjoying it! We made gummy bear molecules in class and my professor always offers us tea at office hours. Yesterday we all split one of those fancy dark chocolate oranges…
Several gummy bears held together with small toothpicks to create a model of a molecule.

  • MUS 122: Music theory (the second class after intro music theory) – this is the last class I’m taking to fulfill my music minor. I wasn’t sure it was going to happen, but it is! To be honest, I’ve been meaning to take music theory for years now, so I’m glad I can get it in now. I really love music classes because so much of it is just listening to music, and I find that Wellesley professors really make an effort to include music from all genres!

  • MUS 344: Another semester of my advanced performance seminar to prepare for my senior (!!!) recital. I have an entire sonata to learn this semester, so wish me luck!
  • Thesis: I’m only taking 3 academic classes because my 4th credit is coming from my thesis! This is pretty common for most thesis students, because a thesis definitely takes the same amount of time as a normal course.

In very exciting news, my quartet for the chamber music society is back to rehearsing this semester, and we’re in the process of picking out new music! Both the first violinist Rohini and I are going to have some form of chamber music in our senior recital. I’m so excited because this semester we’re trying to play pieces by living composers. My senior recital is currently a conglomeration of my “dream” pieces, and one of them is Entr’acte by Caroline Shaw (who just won another grammy!!). I first listened to this piece my senior year of high school when I was applying to college and absolutely loved it, so it’s super full circle that my quartet is going to play it at my senior recital in college. I just think it’s so cool. I’ve been getting kind of emotional over the fact that I may never have the opportunity to study music formally again after college, so I’m really glad we’re just jumping into the music and having fun this semester. We had our first rehearsal today where we just clapped and sang our parts out loud (because there are some tricky rhythm sections), and it filled me with so much joy and glee! Music is awesome, and music with friends is even better!!!

Until next time,
