Hello Blog,
Happy T-minus 2 days to Fall Break! I received an email from a prospective student last week asking about what a typical day in my life looks like, so I thought I’d make a whole blog post about it (with some additional details, of course). Things have been pretty busy, so strap in!
I usually wake up about an hour before the first thing I have to do that day. Some things in my schedule are non-negotiable. I always try to get 7-8 hours of sleep a night, and I’ve gotten into the habit of watching an episode of Gilmore Girls each morning. I don’t like starting off my day feeling rushed and anxious, so this gives me time to really set up my day well. On Friday, my first class was at 9:55am, so I got to sleep in until 9am.
My first class was CHEM 330 (Physical Chemistry) in the science center. This is probably the most difficult class I’m taking this semester because even the best scientists find quantum mechanics confusing. My professor holds office hours, when we can stop by to chat or ask questions, every day (sometimes twice a day) including the weekends though, so there’s a lot of support available.
My next class, REL 106 (Queer Bible), was at 11:20am, so I headed to the academic quad. This is the first class I’m taking in the religion department, and it’s really interesting! Wellesley has distribution requirements, which means each student will need to take a certain number of classes in broad subject areas. This course fulfills the last distribution requirement I need!
For lunch, I headed to the Russian department. My friend is taking a course in the department, and they have Russian themed lunches every Friday – this week there was borscht! We sat in the humanities commons and ended up accidentally crashing an education department social (but we got to meet some new education faculty members).
Once we had finished our soup, we took a quick trip to the Dunkin’ in the Ville (~5 min drive from campus) to get a free coffee for national coffee day. Then my friends dropped me off at the Office of Admission where I had work for the next 2 hours. There are lots of bakers in the office, so I helped myself to a homemade peach galette and cookies. 🙂
I had my weekly lab meeting for my research lab at 4pm, so it was back to the science center for me! Usually what happens is we eat cookies, someone presents an interesting research paper relating to our work, and we discuss the paper. The meeting ended early today, so I headed to CHEM 330 office hours to ask a quick question before my carillon masterclass.
The Guild of Carillonneurs has just finished our application cycle for the fall, and we have new apprentices (please see attached 0.5x selfie and ice cream outing pic). In case you don’t know, the Guild of Carillonneurs are the students who play the bells in Galen Stone Tower on campus. If you read my blog last year, you’ll know I joined the guild around this time last year! This week, I played my new arrangement of the Glee theme song that I’m trying to put together for my friend. After masterclass, we head to Lulu (my favorite dining hall) for carilinner (carillon + dinner). 🙂
Finally, I ended my evening with a Mid-Autumn Festival celebration with my friends. We ate mooncakes, sunflower seeds, and fruit and drank tea. I’d never celebrated this holiday before, so it was nice to share it with my friends.
Until next time,
Jade
