Being an Adult is Hard

Being an adult is so hard! I’ve had a very busy summer so far working at the admissions office and doing a ton of boring paperwork in my free time. I’m studying abroad in Greece this upcoming fall, and I’m SO excited!! But going through the visa application process is no joke. This weekend I went into Brookline to get fingerprinted and get an FBI background check, I also had to get a blood test at health services to prove I don’t have tuberculosis. 🙂 Nevertheless, she persisted, and I have almost all of the documents I need for my visa appointment at the end of the summer. Many study abroad programs will do your visa application for you, but Greece can be picky.

I felt empowered by all the hard work I was doing to get my visa and decided to embrace this whole ‘adult’ thing. After discussing all things taxes and credit scores with my fellow interns, I spent the weekend researching beginner credit card options. I was really hoping to get a credit card with a lot of travel points, but eventually I went with everyone’s recommendation, and I got the Discover student card. I filled out the form in like two minutes, and I was immediately approved, it was honestly criminally easy. I was on a roll after this, after realizing my debit card had a foreign transaction fee I called up Charles Schwab to get a new one but they kept putting me on hold so I went behind their back to Fidelity.

To top off my weekend of productivity, I finally bought my plane tickets to Greece! This has been on my agenda for many months, but money is confusing and I’m just a teenage girl. I’ve never flown internationally by myself before so this will be a learning experience 😬 but I have a 12 hour layover in Stockholm on my way back, so that will be fun! I’m hoping that this will be the first of many international flights, I’ve started planning trips with my other friends studying abroad to places like Türkiye, Georgia, and Copenhagen. The Office of International Study has set up a grant with the Wellesley Student Aid Society for high need students to help with study abroad expenses not covered by financial aid, like passport fees or lost work study wages, so I’m hoping Wellesley will pay me to go abroad 🤞

Being a college student isn’t always glamorous 🙃 but I am trying to set myself up for financial success! Finances are hard, but my fellow Wellesley students have been a great resource and are always happy to share their knowledge.
