Hi all,
Like most people, I used to scroll endlessly on TikTok, watching everything from morning routine vlogs to hyper-specific niche content that somehow always applied to my life. While TikTok can be entertaining (and even informative), I started to realize how much time I was spending consuming instead of creating. So, I decided to take a step back and explore new hobbies that don’t involve an algorithm telling me what to like.
And honestly? It’s been kind of refreshing.
Running (Without the Running Content Overload)
I’ve always been active, but training for my half marathon has given running a new purpose. Instead of watching TikToks about “how to become a runner,” I’ve been figuring it out on my own—listening to my body, adjusting my pace, and feeling the real-time progress. There’s something rewarding about lacing up my shoes and hitting the pavement without the distraction of viral running hacks.
Reading for Fun Again
Without TikTok feeding me book recommendations, I’ve rediscovered the joy of reading without the pressure of “BookTok-approved” titles. I’ve been picking books that genuinely interest me rather than what’s trending. It feels good to enjoy stories at my own pace, without feeling the need to review them online afterward.
Journaling & Writing
Instead of mindlessly scrolling before bed, I’ve been writing more—whether it’s journaling about my day, setting goals, or even drafting blog posts like this. Writing gives me space to process my thoughts in a way that social media never could. It’s also nice to create something that exists just for me, rather than for likes or engagement.
Spending Time Outside
Whether it’s going on a walk, practicing lacrosse, or just taking a break between classes, being outside has become one of my favorite ways to reset. Without TikTok, I’m noticing small details I used to overlook—the way the trees are changing color, the crispness of the air, the simple joy of fresh air without distraction.
The Best Part? More Presence, Less Noise
Taking a step back from TikTok hasn’t been about “quitting social media” but rather about reclaiming my time. I’ve found more clarity, more creativity, and a greater appreciation for the things I truly enjoy—not just what’s trending online.
Will I go back to scrolling eventually? Maybe. But for now, I’m enjoying the quiet…and Instagram Reels 😅
Until next week,
Anna Tutek
