Hello everyone! My name is Vyara (she/her), and I’m once again one of your student bloggers! I’m an international student from Bulgaria, a current sophomore (it feels weird saying that instead of “I’m a freshman!”), and I’m a future physics major.
My hobbies include reading, listening to music, and scrolling through Pinterest (yes, that does sound a bit boring on paper, but I promise you, I’m more fun than those suggest!). My favorite author is Agatha Christie—I literally wrote one of my admission essays in the form of a fanfiction with her and The Doctor from Doctor Who. My music taste is all over the place—I love generic pop, but also Disney soundtracks and Broadway music. Currently, while I’m writing my first draft of this introduction, I’m listening to I Wanna Dance with Somebody by Whitney Houston.
A fun fact about me is that I took a gap year before my freshman year at Wellesley. As I would describe myself, I’m an introverted adventurer. I can be a bit shy and awkward sometimes, and I do enjoy doing things alone, but I also love doing random things, especially if they are unplanned. I spent my gap year volunteering around Europe and getting myself into the craziest situations across the continent (I’m convinced that my gap year essay is what got me into Wellesley, to be honest, hah).
I also love nature and traveling, which is why this is the current decoration of my room in Tower Court:
On campus, I’m involved in research through the Sophomore Early Research Program with Professor Hall (or Katie as she wants us to call her). She was my professor for my first Physics class my first semester at Wellesley. I enjoyed that class so much that I will be declaring a major in Physics later in the semester. I’m also involved with Slater, the international students organization on campus. I’m the co-European representative (shout out to Marta, my co-representative). Slater is a really cool organization that you can join even if you don’t identify as an international student—you can join to learn more about different cultures and learn from people with different backgrounds. We organize the Cultural Show in the fall, we do advocacy work, and we host regional events from different parts of the world. Some of the people involved in Slater (like me!) were involved in organizing the International Student Orientation in August, which is one of my favorite memories at Wellesley.
I’m looking forward to taking you on my journey this year with me!
