Hi all,
The best part of the entire school year was just here. If you go to Wellesley, you know Marathon Monday isn’t just a Boston thing but instead it’s a Wellesley thing. It might as well be its own holiday on campus. There are few traditions that hit as hard (and as loud) as the Wellesley Scream Tunnel.
For those who have not experienced it (yet): every Marathon Monday, students line up along mile 13 of the Boston Marathon route—right outside campus—and absolutely lose their voices cheering for runners. It’s chaos. It’s joy. It’s hand-made signs, glitter, cowbells, screaming until your throat hurts, and watching strangers tear up because of the support. It’s one of those “you have to be there” experiences that sounds kind of ridiculous until you are, and then you’re all in.
The festivities start early. People are out with sidewalk chalk, blasting music and having a great time. Even if you’re not a runner, for that one day, you feel like you’re part of something big.
The Scream Tunnel is one of those weirdly beautiful things that stays with you after Wellesley. You might forget about the grades you got or assignments you had but the marathon is an unforgettable experience. It’s about showing up for strangers and celebrating human grit and community and joy.
So yeah—Marathon Monday is technically about the race, but at Wellesley? It’s about the scream. And trust me, it’s one of the loudest, proudest parts of being here.
Until next week,
