Oh My God! Cape Cod

Hello Blog!

The last few weeks I’ve gotten a true taste of a New England summer! My friends and I visited Cape Cod and Martha’s Vineyard. I’ve enjoyed the beaches and escaping the ninety plus degree weather. Wellesley has been beautiful and very green.

On our visit to Cape Cod, we left early to avoid some of the traffic. Luckily, the summer season isn’t in full swing yet so our trip went smoothly. First, we visited the town of Chatham. There were lots of cute shops, and I had a great lavender latte. Next, we went to the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy Shark Center. We did a giant shark puzzle, and I learned about different species. There was a shark cage, and I got to hold a small torpedo object they use to tag and track the sharks. There was also a paddleboard with a shark bite mark. After the Shark Center, we headed down to the beach. We went to Mayflower beach which is on the Cape Cod bay side. It was low tide, and there were tide pools with crabs. It was my first time going to the beach in New England!

About a week later, I visited Martha’s Vineyard. Since it’s an island, we drove towards the Cape, then took a shuttle bus to get to the ferry. It was about a 45 minute ferry. After arriving on the island, we grabbed coffee and went to the Flying Horses Carousel. It’s the oldest platform carousel in the United States, and it was built in 1884. Next, we visited the Gingerbread Houses. These houses were built in the mid-1800s and boast vibrant colors and intricate details. Now, there are 318 houses in many pastel colors. My friends and I enjoyed imagining which house we would want to live in!

After the houses, we rented bicycles and biked about three miles to the beach. There are many bike trails on the island, and there were quite a few people on the ferry who looked like they were only on the island to road bike. The beach we went to was right beside a bridge that was in the movie Jaws. You can jump off the bridge into deep water so I did that a few times. We all laid on the beach for a while but eventually headed back to the town, Oak Bluffs, where the ferry had dropped us off in the morning. We got pizza and ice cream, and I bought a magnet to add to the fridge in my dorm room.

Overall, I’m loving being at Wellesley for the summer and I’m grateful my friends from the Northeast have been helping me explore.

Until next time,

Elise
