Happy Friday! Today, I will recap my past fall break in Rhode Island. Fall break is a long weekend here every October, with no classes on Monday for Indigenous Peoples’ Day and no classes the following day.
This fall break, I visited one of my childhood best friends at her school, the University of Rhode Island (URI). Saturday morning, I took the Wellesley loco shuttle to Boston, walked to Back Bay train station, and then took the Amtrak to Kingston, Rhode Island. This was my first ever time in Rhode Island, and I was thrilled to explore more of New England. The train ride there was only one hour, which is one of my favorite aspects of New England and the east coast: many major cities are close to each other and accessible by train or bus.
We were blessed with amazing blue skies and warm weather that Saturday. Kingston was beautiful and the autumnal orange leaves were on full display. I saw my friend’s dorm and we drove to an Oktoberfest street fair in the village of Wakefield, where we enjoyed live music. I tried some delicious quesadillas and ice cream from local stores.
We also took a quick detour to a beach, which was definitely a highlight. I did not realize how long it’s been since I have seen the ocean! I dipped my feet in and the photos below should show my reaction to the cold water… Super worth getting my jeans soaked though!
My friend gave me a tour of her campus, and I met more of her college friends and ate dinner at a URI dining hall. I’d say URI’s food is pretty on par with Wellesley Fresh, our dining services. My friend studies pharmacy and my favorite part of her tour was seeing a mock CVS in the pharmacy school for students to practice at! I loved seeing the URI campus because it was an eye opening contrast from Wellesley as it is a large state school and campus.
The day went by too quickly and soon, I had to leave the following afternoon to return to Boston. I used Amtrak and once again the loco shuttle to get back to campus. On Monday and Tuesday, I focused on doing homework and studying for a history midterm I have this week. We are now officially deep into midterm exams and essays! Overall, it was such a fun trip to Rhode Island, and I am so happy being on the same coast allows us to see each other like this. Thank you so much for reading!
