Sew It Begins: Sutures, Shows, and Sweet Treats

Greetings my lovely readers! I hope y’all are feeling rejuvenated and had a chill week last week… mine was kinda hectic, not gonna lie. We’re only about a week away from classes finishing for the semester, so that means finals are right around the corner, and somehow life has decided to speed up like real fast….. Between assignments, group projects, and trying to remember what sleep feels like, it’s been a lot y’all!!!

But honestly? I’m excited. We’re so close to the finish line, and soon I’ll be heading home for winter break ( I have not been home since May, so I am so excited to see my family!!!) It will be nice to get some actual downtime and just rot in bed all day, watching Netflix. It feels like the chaos is worth it knowing a little holiday magic is just around the corner 😊.

So let me tell y’all about my Thursday Night…..it was very much me ( a college student) trying to get into the character of a doctor, and honestly, I loved every second. It started with a suturing workshop hosted by my friends, the co-presidents of our Minority Association of Premedical Students. Fake skin, tiny tools, the chance to feel like a surgeon without actually putting anyone at risk (I am not at that stage yet lmaoo) — I was all in. There’s something undeniably thrilling about pretending you’re performing delicate surgery while simultaneously trying not to make a fool of yourself in front of friends. I have also watched way too many episodes of Criminal Minds guys, so stuff like this really gets me hype honestly 😂.

So the demo came first: how to hold forceps, the difference between a continuous stitch and an interrupted stitch, and the very important rule of not injuring ourselves of course! To be real with y’all, I definitely did stab myself with the needle a couple of times lol. It’s fine though because they were very minor scratches…..Anyways, back to the suturing…… .Watching it felt like a live-action Grey’s Anatomy scene, except everyone was laughing at their first attempts instead of saving lives. Then came the hands-on part, and my first stitch… let’s call it “abstract art.” By the second attempt, though, I was genuinely impressed with myself. I don’t mean to brag or anything but I ate y’all!!!!!😜. Somehow, silicone has never felt so rewarding. Honestly, I think Grey’s Anatomy should be nervous because once I become a doctor, oh prepare to be sick of me lmaooo.

These are some pics I took at the workshop. So these were the stitches we did using the fake skin model. It was super fun, and I definitely learnt a lot about sutures. Idk y’all I kinda ate even if I do say so myself…..

So after loads of laughs and a really fun workshop, we headed back to Bates Hall to chill. Dinner happened, I had some pasta with marinara sauce and cheese (a regular occurrence for me at this point). Naturally, we had to find a show while we ate, so we threw on All’s Fair, the new Ryan Murphy show about an all-women law firm. Honestly  guys, I was living for the mess that was unfolding before our eyes. A group of high-powered lawyers yelling at each other while we were quietly shoveling food into your face — like what could be better? I spent most of the episode thinking this cannot be real life lol. The show is so dramatic…..

And then came dessert, because of course it did. After some internal debate,  I decided I needed something sweet. I am very much that person who has to have something sweet once I have had a meal (my inherent sweet tooth has me in a chokehold…..). Enter: Playa Bowl, ordered right from Bates. No need to walk anywhere, just pure, convenient happiness. Anyone who’s been reading knows Playa is basically my emotional support food, so this was not negotiable. I even wrote a whole blog post about my love for playa bowls…..y’all should go read it 😉. It took me wayyy too long to place my order lol. I may have taken a moment to admire the toppings like a scientist appreciating fine detail — maybe they reminded me of tiny, edible sutures? Who can say. Anyways my bowl arrived, and the joy I felt was unmatched.

By 10:30, the night shifted into late-night productivity mode. Laptop open, Playa Bowl beside me, I settled in to do work, fully aware that I was simultaneously ‘preparing’ for medical school, indulging my sweet tooth, and procrastinating in the most classic Wellesley way. The juxtaposition was truly perfect: a little surgical, a little absurd, a little sweet, and very me.

So anyways… that was my night: a little surgical, a little chaotic, a little sweet, and a whole lot of me just trying to survive life before finals hit. Not bad for a Thursday night right?  Honestly, I think everyone should get a Playa Bowl in their life — like Oprah style. You get a bowl, I get a bowl, everyone gets a bowl. Boom. Instant happiness. It’s basically the key to surviving late nights, suturing practice, and the looming reality of finals week.. So I will leave y’all with that piece of advice! Thank you for joining me again, I look forward to our next catch up guys!!

See you soon, loveliesss!
With love,

 Your favourite Brit x ♥️
