Hi all,
With the cold winter finally upon us, this blog today seemed almost too fitting. If you’ve never experienced winter in New England, get ready for a season filled with snow-covered landscapes, freezing temperatures, and plenty of opportunities for outdoor adventure. While the cold weather can certainly be intense, it also brings a unique charm that makes the season special. From sledding down hills to taking peaceful walks by the frozen Lake Waban, winter in New England offers a little something for everyone but make sure you’re prepared for it!
What to Bring: Winter Essentials for a Cold-Weather School
If you’re heading to school in a state with real winters, packing the right gear is essential. Here’s a list of must-haves to help you stay warm and comfortable:
Clothing & Accessories
- A heavy-duty winter coat – Look for one that’s insulated and windproof.
- Waterproof snow boots – Cold, wet feet are no fun. Get boots with good traction for icy sidewalks.
- Thermal socks – Wool socks are a lifesaver for keeping your feet warm.
- Gloves or mittens – Mittens tend to be warmer, but gloves offer more dexterity.
- Hat and earmuffs – Heat escapes through your head, so cover up!
- A warm scarf – Great for layering and blocking the wind.
- Base layers – These help trap heat on especially frigid days.
Winter Survival Gear
- Hand warmers – Perfect for long walks to class or waiting for the bus.
- A durable backpack – One that’s water-resistant will protect your books and laptop from snow. Trust me you don’t want wet notebooks.
- Lip balm and moisturizer – Winter air can be brutally dry. Keep your skin and lips hydrated. Aquaphor is my go-to!
- Insulated water bottle – You might not feel as thirsty, but hydration is still key! Even with limited sun exposure, you can still become dehydrated.
With all of these tools, you will be ready to take on the winter and enjoy the outdoor activities that come with it. Speaking of which, below are some options to try out the next time you’re at Wellesley in the winter.
