Wellesley Walks

Hi Blog,

Today, we ask the age-old question: what do Wellesley students do as they walk to various locations across campus? This may seem like a strange question, but with a campus as beautiful as Wellesley’s, walks are some of my daily highlights. Whether it’s an intentional long walk around the lake or 10 minutes between classes, I like to make sure whatever’s in my ears lends itself to maximum romanticization.

Of course, sometimes you want a “silent” walk. There’s nothing like the crunch of leaves in the fall, and we have lots of wildlife on campus. In the summer, there are a lot of baby raccoons that definitely make some interesting noises. Also, chances are that if you’re walking in between classes you’ll be able to hear music from the bell tower from wherever you are on campus. The Guild of Carillonneurs play 10 minute concerts during most passing periods, and I love hearing my friends perform!

Next, there’s the impromptu walk and chat. Wellesley has a student body of about 2300, which means that while it’s unlikely that I’ll know everybody during my four years here, I am constantly running into friends and familiar faces. We don’t even necessarily plan to walk together, but we end up running into each other, and those surprise chats are always lovely.

The obvious answer seems to be listening to music. In a post-Spotify wrapped 2023 (and Apple Music replay for my fellow users 😔✋), music seems to be on everyone’s minds (and in everyone’s ears). I polled a few of my friends to see some of their favorite songs to listen to while walking around campus.

  • Anna: What I Want by MUNA (paying homage to the band that performed at the Last Day of Classes concert last year)
  • Sydney: Drama by aespa (fast beat = faster walking = saves time on the way to class)
  • Vivian: The first movement of Borodin’s 2nd string quartet (something about this piece is SO Fall)
  • Me: Anything But by Hozier (fun and upbeat, makes me want to become one with nature)

Finally, I’ve recently been getting into podcasts, largely through the recommendation of my friends. I’ve been enjoying This American Life and You’re Wrong About. The moral of the story is that if you see me walking around campus, I’ve got some great things going on.

Until next time,
