What to do for fun at Wellesley

Hello Blog! Last week, I wrote about my experience living in dorms at Wellesley—a top question on the mind of prospective students—and this week I will answer another top question: what do Wellesley students do for fun in their free time?

Firstly for on-campus events and fun, Wellesley departments, offices, or organizations are usually hosting something every week. This month, there are several dance troupes on campus like WADO (Wellesley Asian Dance Organization) and FreeStyle that are having their spring showcase performances. WZLY, the student radio station that I am a part of, is having our “birthday party” this weekend to commemorate WZLY’s founding; it will be an outdoor concert with local college bands performing! And personally, I like to hang out with friends in one of the dining halls to catch up over a meal or hang out in a friend’s dorm room.

As for the town of Wellesley, I really enjoy walking around the Ville, one of the Wellesley town centers near campus. Last year, I wrote this blog post with photos detailing my favorite parts of the town of Wellesley, and I still stand by it! Since I wrote that, several new food spots have opened up within walking distance from campus: Playa Bowls, Van Leeuwen Ice Cream, and Shake Shack have opened, and a Blank Street Coffee may be opening in the near future (no promises though). My favorite spot in the Ville is Cocobeet, a vegan eatery and juice bar. This technically is not in Wellesley, but I love taking the school’s Mall & Movie Shuttle that goes to nearby suburb Natick; the shuttle runs every Saturday and goes to the Natick Mall, AMC Movie Theater, and Target. Taking the Mall & Movie shuttle costs one token or punch, which is $3.

And lastly, Boston! Honestly, Cambridge and Boston are where many Wellesley students go to have fun on the weekends, whether that means going to restaurants, concerts, shopping, etc. I am so grateful for our school shuttle bus, called the Locomotion, that goes into Cambridge and Boston everyday. Here is the shuttle bus schedule to see the more specific locations. I think that the most popular shuttle stops on weekends are the Harvard Square stop and the Marlboro Market stop, which drops you off right in Boston next to Newbury Street. The shuttle is free on weekdays until Friday night, where it then costs $3 per ride for the whole weekend, so $6 round trip. To pay for the shuttle, you can buy a token in Lulu Chow Wang Campus Center for $3 with cash, or buy a punch pass with 10 rides for $30 in the college bookstore using cash or a card. Then when you enter the shuttle, you hand the driver your token or the driver punches your pass.
